The Diocesan Archives of Pécs was established on December 27, 2015, through the merger of the Episcopal Archives of Pécs and the Chapter Archives of Pécs. The two archives, which had previously been separate in every respect, were thus combined into a single institution, both legally and organizationally. Prior to the merger, which was justified from a professional standpoint, it was necessary to relocate the records of the two archives to a single location. Therefore, in the summer of 2014, the holdings of the Episcopal Archives were moved to the building of the Chapter Archives, where—to facilitate research—a five-seat reading room was established. However, the merger did not mean the dissolution of the two historical archives, as the archival inventory continues to treat their records as separate collections. The merger, which fully complies with all ecclesiastical and secular legal regulations and requirements, was primarily motivated by the need to reduce administrative tasks; the establishment of the Diocesan Archives of Pécs was ordered by Dr. György Udvardy, Bishop of Pécs, exercising his right as the maintaining authority.
